Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to make decisions in a legal context. It is intended to satisfy the requirement for a course of study in commercial law at an introductory or foundation level covering Australian legal systems and processes.                              

This unit has broad application and can be used wherever candidates have a need to make decisions in a context of the Australian legal system and it also enhances the skills and knowledge in the following areas;

  • The Legal System: legal foundations, the Constitution, statute law,
  • The Legal System: the courts, case law and dispute resolution,
  • Civil liability: tort of negligence,
  • Civil liability: intentional torts and defamation,
  • Business structures,
  • Agency law,
  • Partnerships and Joint ventures,
  • Negotiable instruments and EFT,
  • Credit law and the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act,
  • Bankruptcy and debt recovery,
  • Privacy and e-commerce,
  • Marketing law and ethics,
  • Intellectual property,
  • Insurance law,
  • Employment Law and industrial relations, and
  • Workplace health and safety and workers compensation.

Professional Accreditation: 

The unit meets the Australian Tax Practitioner Board educational requirements for Tax Agent registration and or renewal of registration. 

Persons seeking Tax Agent registration should check with the Tax Practitioners Board for details of current specific individual educational requirements, including those relating to experience and, fitness and propriety.

Assessments may include, but are not limited to: online activities and validation assessments as prescribed within each unit of competency.

Online activities                 

The TAFE SA Learn application will host online activities that are designed to assess your understanding of the key theories and concepts of the course. These activities will provide you with the opportunity to test your own learning and to identify areas that may require further study. Once your activities have been submitted, you will be provided with solutions to check against your own work.

Validation assessment

The contents of the validation assessment will cover material discussed in the compulsory reading material and online activities. The exact form of the validation assessment will be unsupervised and/or supervised as prescribed within each course profile or advised by your lecturer/ teaching assistant. Duration:  80 hours or 16 weeks.

Study Load:

TAFE SA Accounting and Finance division expects students to devote a total of 12 hours per week to each unit of study.
