To satisfy the Tax Practitioner Board (TPB) educational requirements for Tax (financial) Adviser registration or renewal you will require both Taxation Law and Commercial Law courses.

The following options are available for those who may, or may not, have completed prior qualifications in Taxation or Commercial law. Click here to view the other TPB educational requirements.

If you do not have prior qualifications in Tax Law or Commercial Law

You will need to complete the following taxation and commercial law courses to satisfy the TPB educational requirements for the Tax (financial) Adviser registration or renewal.

Australian Taxation law courses

Australian Taxation Law for Tax (Financial) Advisers (TAFESA/TPB10) OR

FNSTPB506 Apply taxation requirements when providing tax (financial) advice services 

Australian Commercial law courses

Australian Commercial Law for Tax (Financial) Advisers (TAFESA/TPB11)OR

FNSTPB507 Apply legal principles in commercial law when providing tax (financial) advice services 

If you do have prior qualifications in Tax Law

If you have previously completed a Diploma or above level taxation law unit/(s) or similar unit/(s) meeting a majority of equivalent learning outcomes below, with any Australian registered training organisation or university, you have the following options:

Option 1: If you have previously completed the Diploma or above level unit FNSACC502B Prepare legally compliant tax returns for individuals or Australian Taxation Law I (TAFESA TPB 1) or similar units meeting a majority of equivalent learning outcomes (click here to view the learning outcomes), with an Australian registered training organisation or university, you will need to complete  Australian Taxation Law II (TAFESA TPB 2) 

Option 2: If you have previously completed the Diplomaor above level unit FNSACC601B Prepare and administer compliant tax returns for legal entities or Australian Taxation Law II (TAFESA TPB 2) or similar units meeting a majority of equivalent learning outcomes (click here to view the learning outcomes), with any Australian registered training organisation or university, you will need to complete Australian Taxation Law I (TAFESA TPB 1) 

If you do have prior qualifications in Commercial Law

If you have previously completed the Diploma or above level commercial law unit/(s) or similar unit/(s) meeting a majority of equivalent learning outcomes below, with an Australian registered training organisation or university, you may have partially satisfied the TPB registration requirements. You will need to complete any outstanding units on the following list:

§Australian Commercial Law I (TAFESA TPB TAX 3)

§Australian Commercial Law II (TAFESA TPB TAX 4) 

§Australian Commercial Law III (TAFESA TPB TAX 5)

Additional course requirement

From 1 July 2013  Tax (financial) Advisersare required to have completed a course in Australian taxation law that is approved by the Tax Practitioners Board and must have completed a course which includes a component in the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), including the Code of Professional Conduct (Code).
